Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners to Join GSSoC

Get Started with GSSoC

Here is a beginner's guide:

GirlScript Summer of Code is one of the most popular open-source programs in India with thousands of participants from across the globe 🌍

1. Get yourself registered
The first step is simple: register! Fill out the application form here: https://gssoc.girlscript.tech/registration

2. Explore Projects
Once you’ve registered and the coding period starts, you’ll get access to a list of open-source projects you can contribute to. These projects span various technologies like web development, mobile development, AI, and more.
👉 Check out the projects on the GSSoC website.

3. Find the GitHub Repo

Every project in GSSoC is hosted on GitHub, so you’ll be working primarily through this platform.
● Carefully read the README file, as it gives you essential information on how the project works.
● Check out the contribution guidelines—this will tell you the rules for making contributions, whether it's coding, documentation, or testing.

Tip: Make sure you have a basic understanding of GitHub workflows like forking, committing, and submitting pull requests (PR). If you're new, take the time to learn GitHub through tutorials or resources like GitHub Docs.

4. Create an Issue

If you see something you'd like to work on or if you have a new idea, create an issue.📌 This is just a way of telling the project maintainers what you want to change or add to the project.

5. Get Assigned
Once the project owner or mentor approves your issue, they’ll assign it to you.

6. Fork the Repo and Work on It
Fork (copy) the project’s repository, download it to your local machine and start working on the assigned task.

7. Submit a Pull Request (PR)
After completing your work, submit a PR to the original repository.
● Write a clear PR description—explain what you changed and why.
● Be open to feedback. Mentors or maintainers might ask for revisions before they merge your code.

Tip: Make sure you’re getting labels like GSSoC-Ext, Winter of Blockchain, or Hacktoberfest-accepted, along with level 1, level 2, etc.

All the best 🤗
